The 3 Mental Opponents India Must Conquer in Order to Triumph Over Sri Lanka in Tests

After nearly nine months, India are set to resume their WTC campaign as they take on Sri Lanka in a two-match series. Galle is the scene of the 1st Test and the action gets underway on August 15. Last year they got whitewashed by South Africa on home soil, but Galle will not give Shubman Gill’s men time to remember the baggage of 2025. There are fresh set of problems. India are favourites on paper, but they face three mental opponents during the Tests vs Sri Lanka. Bowling coach Morne Morkel highlighted these factors. The Galle Fort sits in the backdrop of the stadium and is surrounded by the Indian Ocean on the other sides. The humidity this brings can be drain the energy out of the players of which they got a firsthand experience while practicing under the sun. Then come the ball dynamics. The machine-stitched Kookaburra balls bring problems similar to what India and England faced during the 2025 Test series when they could not adjust to the soft balls. The seam usually flattens out and the softness happens earlier than expected. This cuts down the window of opportunity to make most of a new Kookaburra ball. That can take a toll on the batting side. "I think coming here, our skill is there, the planning will be there, but the biggest challenge will be the heat and humidity. It is a venue or a country where your mindset is very, very key. The [Kookaburra] ball will go softer after 20-25 overs, I always expect that. But then what is our next step? And to be street smart in terms of how we're going to use the crease, how we're going to use our short ball. All those conditions and all those sort of situations we need to be able to sum up quite quickly. And then, yeah, execute it with a lot of energy," said Morkel as per Cricbuzz. © X/ICC"How we can stack up overs together with intensity and create that pressure. Because we haven't played a lot of red-ball cricket in the last couple of months, and going back into that is going to be a challenge. That's something I'm quite excited about. We're quite excited to see how these guys can stand up and form those partnerships and create that pressure. For us, we've prepared basically for all that can come our way. And like I said, for us, it's more about the mental challenge now, facing these conditions, batting time, bowling those spells," he added.Can India Continue to Dominate? India have never lost a Test series to Sri Lanka since 2008. Nor have they lost a Test since 2015. India have also won their last five Tests in Sri Lanka.
